Louisiana crawfish have been commercially available as food source since the late 1800's. The earliest account of a commercial crawfish harvest can be traced back to the year 1880 where crawfisherman netted over 23,000 pounds and bringing in $2100. In the wild, the two species of commercial significance are the red swamp crawfish (Procambarus clarkia) and the white river crawfish (Procambarus zonangulus). Because the species often coexist, it is common to find both in the same catch, and it is nearly impossible for crawfishermen to attract one species over the other in the wild. These wild crawfish are caught primarily in riparian zones, or lands and waters along rivers and slow moving streams

Yabbie Parasite : Crayfish Parasite :Temnocephids / Temnocephalida / Flat Worm
Temnocephids / The Temnocephalida are an order of turbellarian flatworms, Platyhelminthes (flat worms).
Unlike most other turbellarians, all the species in this order are either commensal or parasitic. They can be found living on crustaceans, molluscs, and, in some species, even turtles. The commensal species typically live in the gill or mantle cavities of their hosts, while the parasites live inside the digestive system. Anatomically, temnocephalidans can be distinguished from related groups by the presence of an adhesive disc on the underside for attachment to the host, and of a number of finger-like projections arising from the head.

Crayfish Plague / Crawfish Plague : The Plague Fungus ( Aphanomyces Astaci )
Segment with brown (ventral) markings shows signs of typical infection from fungus. Segments either side indicate healthy muscle tissue |
Aphanomyces Astaci commonly referred to as crayfish plague is an oomycete or water mould that infects only crayfish species. It is endemic of North America and is carried by North American crayfish species; signal crayfish Pacifastacus Leniusculus, Procambarus Clarkii and Orconectes Limosus. A. Astaci was introduced into Europe through imports of North American species of crayfish. Native European crayfish populations are not resistant to this oomycete. It has since devastated native crayfish stocks throughout the continent.

Water Parameter for Crayfish / Crawfish
Crayfish can be farmed in large freshwater ponds, a practice known as aquaculture, for food. The most commonly farmed species are Red Claw Crayfish (Cherax Quadricarinatus) in Southeast Asia and Australia and Red Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) in America. Aquaculture fields typically are shallow ponds sometimes filled with swamp weeds and grass. The substrate of the pond is mud, preferably with a high clay content to prevent water from draining away.
Red Claw : Best Time for Daily Feeding
Research has shown that red claw are most active in the evening between 6 p.m. and midnight. This should be the best time for daily feeding since the animals are actively foraging during this period. Broodstock nutrition is

Crayfish Race / Yabby Race / Yabbies Race
Spirits were high as was the bidding at Australia's richest yabbie races on the Western Downs in Queensland over the weekend.
The event saw fashion, fun and frivolity, with some revellers declaring that it could easily have been Melbourne rather than Moonie.
Moonie's third annual yabbie races attracted around 300 people who watched 64 crustaceans compete in eight races.

White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) has been confirmed in Crawfish / Crayfish
Facts on White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV)
By LSU AgCenter. White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) has been confirmed for the first time in Louisiana in crawfish / crayfish from a pond in St. Martin Parish.
This crawfish disease seems to affect mostly the medium to large crawfish / crayfish. Symptoms include sluggish crawfish that don’t move much once they are dumped from the trap. They do not pinch hard and can’t walk. There are no color differences or obvious signs other than weakness and slowness. Some dead crawfish are noticeable in the traps while others are noticeable in the shallow water along the edge of the pond.

Moulting Process
Postmolt (postecdysis)
Postmolt is the stage just following exuviation (shedding of the old exoskeleton). It is the period when the exoskeleton expands due to increased hemolymph volume from water influx. Water influx occurs across the epidermis, gills, and gut. After several hours or days (depending upon total length of the molt cycle), the new exoskeleton hardens and retains its rigidity (Chang, 1992).
Immediately after ecdysis, the only layers present are the epicuticle and exocuticle. Within a few hours the epidermis starts to secrete the endocuticle. Most of the cuticle must be derived from materials stored in the epidermis, as feeding does not begin until the prawn is well into the intermolt stage. This secretion continues until the prawns are in the intermoult condition, when the three layers are fully formed (Dall et al., 1990).
